3/21/2024 Day 173, Thursday, Mapping poverty

At 7:00 a.m. I woke up at my girlfriend’s apartment. She and I got ready for the day.

At 8:30 a.m. I drove to work. I spent the day working in the office since no one was available to do outreach with me. I can’t go out into the street alone and do outreach. If I’m by myself something could happen and nobody would know. Instead I developed a relationship with a methadone and Suboxone provider, these are medications for people with opioid use disorder. In other words it’s an opioid-based medicine to help fentanyl users curb their addiction. While I was in the office I did a few shelter intakes for new guests. Which means I admitted street walk-ins into the shelter since we had some beds available.

At 3:00 p.m. I spent about 2 hours using Google Earth to create a map of all the resources and the encampments around the city from data that I have compiled since I started doing outreach.

At 5:00 p.m. I left work and I went to the tent. It was a windy night, and the wind was blowing the tent around ferociously. The tent seems to have stood up well against the wind, but it still is unsettling and makes it hard to sleep.
