I woke up at my girl’s apartment around 6:30 a.m. and I left for work at around 7:00 a.m. I wanted to get to work a little early so I could leave early because it’s Friday! 🎉
I arrived at work around 7:30 a.m. and I spent a good amount of time talking to Corey. He was a gentleman that was using drugs in the street and I got him into the shelter. He was caught using drugs in the shelter and he was given the option to go to treatment and come back to the shelter or go back out to the street. He ended up going into treatment and stayed there for almost 2 months and then came back to the shelter. He’s been clean off the drugs and he’s doing great now. Corey and I had a long conversation about life, and personal success.
I had heard from another social service worker that City Hall was having a health fair down at the Commons Park right across the street from the City Hall. I decided to take a walk down there and check it out. It was a small affair. I stopped by each table and it seemed that a lot of it was community-based stuff, like Parks and recreation and some other elderly care and local health care stuff, but not a lot of stuff to support the homeless population of the city. I did have a conversation with the mayor’s assistant who expressed interest in doing the type of work that I do. I explained to the mayor’s assistant, who was a young wiry fellow with a lot of energy, that I would propose it to my director, but he was highly under experienced. I did like the gentlemen’s gumption though.
I walked back to the shelter. One of the shelter guests, a young man who had just graduated high school, was having a barbecue in his honor. The shelter guest struggles with what I believe to be Asperger’s, that is my best guess, I’m sure there’s other things involved, I did see him have a seizure once, but I just do not know the extent of his mental health issues. I know that he lives in the shelter because he had become violent in the home that he lived in before. Although he’s always been very well behaved in the shelter from what I had seen.Once again we had a big barbecue. The new high school graduate was the guest of Honor. It was a great time and I had a great dinner.
I left work around 4:00 p.m. and went to my girlfriend’s apartment. She and I spent the night together. We’ve been growing closer lately.
At around 9:00 p.m. while in intimate relations with my partner, I received a phone call from a member of the prison to prosperity group. It is not usual for me to answer the phone at this time, the ringer just happened to be on and my girlfriend suggested that I answer it. It was Jimmy, who told me that Danny McGuire died. Danny McGuire was a man that was in the prison to prosperity group. He had a massive pitbull named Bear. Danny struggled with alcoholism and crack addiction. What I was told is that he was sick or had complications and went to the hospital and died there. I’m guessing that alcoholism and crack contributed to his death. I was very sad to hear the news.
